Review by Kelsey Rollins Morlock

Six Concertos by JS Bach is an exceptional album that showcases the genius of Johann Sebastian Bach through the virtuosity of Vasso Devetzi, the Moscow Chamber Orchestra, and Rudolf Barshai. The album features six concertos, each one displaying Bach's mastery of melody, harmony, and counterpoint.

Devetzi's performance on the violin is remarkable, bringing to life Bach's intricate compositions with precision and passion. The Moscow Chamber Orchestra, under the direction of Barshai, provides the perfect accompaniment, balancing the soloist's virtuosity with a rich and nuanced orchestral sound.

The first concerto, in A minor, is a tour de force of Baroque music, with its fast-paced allegro movements and expressive adagios. The second concerto, in E major, is equally impressive, with its lively rhythms and intricate interplay between the soloist and the orchestra.

The third concerto, in D minor, is perhaps the most famous of the six, with its hauntingly beautiful adagio that has become a staple of classical music concerts. Devetzi's interpretation of this piece is breathtaking, capturing the emotional depth and complexity of Bach's composition.

The fourth concerto, in G major, is a joyful and exuberant piece that showcases Bach's mastery of melody and harmony. The fifth concerto, in A minor, is a more introspective work, with its melancholic adagio and contemplative allegro movements.

About JS Bach Vasso Devetzi, Moscow Chamber Orchestra, Rudolf Barshai

Johann Sebastian Bach was born on March 21, 1685 in Eisenach, Thuringia, Germany. A prolific German composer and organist, his sacred and secular works for choir, orchestra and solo instruments drew together the strands of the baroque genre and brought it to its ultimate maturity. Although he introduced no new forms, he enriched the prevailing German style with a robust contrapuntal technique, a control of harmonic and motivic organisation from the smallest to the largest scales, and the adaptation of rhythms and textures from abroad, particularly Italy and France. Many people consider him to be the greatest Baroque composer, and one of the greatest composers of all time. Revered for their intellectual depth, technical command and artistic beauty, J.S. Bach's works include the Brandenburg concertos, the keyboard suites and partitas, the Mass in B Minor, the St. Matthew Passion, The Musical Offering, The Art of Fugue and a large number of cantatas, of which about 220 survive. He died on July 28, 1750. Some of his sons also became composers - , , and .

I have the maroon "hi-fi" Lp, but actually never played it... Thanks for uploading, Rolf

A tad on the "tinny" side because of it being from a cassette, but a really nice performance. I still have a cassette player in my car, so I always hear the difference in a cassette, versus when I play the CD player. BRIAN
